For the guests of the Ohana Guest House who are most interested in culture, the curiosities of our island and who wish to combine our wonderful offer of sun, beach and nautical sports with cultural and historical aspects, I am writing this post where you will discover secrets and curiosities of our magnificent island.
1. NAZIS IN FUERTEVENTURA
Among the curiosities of the documents classified by the FBI in 2014 are some data that refer to Fuerteventura. One is the possibility that Hitler did not die in the Berlin bunker, in April 1945, and he returned to Fuerteventura in his flight to Argentina, as he has been extensively treated in the docuserie, persecuting Hitler, of Canal Historia. The other intriguing fact was the fear of the American military that the Germans installed a secret base, not of submarines, but of the fearsome bomb-rocket, V2, on the island of Fuerteventura, to attack the east coast of the United States. The idea seems preposterous, but it is not if Von Braun had had time to develop the long-range technology of V2.
2. HOLLYWOOD
The beach of Cofete, 12km of virgin beach and bravio sea, is located in the south of the island of Fuerteventura. The immense sandy beach and the incredible volcanic landscape contrast with the turquoise waters. This wild beach is located to the south and was the scene selected to shoot "The Planet of the Apes" (1968) and, more currently, the film "Exodus" (2014), all due to its spectacular landscape.
They have also shot in Fuerteventura parts of the films of HAN SOLO of STAR WARS, WONDERWOMAN 1984, ONLY and several more during these last years.
3. THE GREAT WALL
The peninsula of Jandia receives the name of the Wall in memory of the wall that was built in this area to separate the two kingdoms in which the island of Fuerteventura was formerly divided. From that wall you can still see some remains today.
4. MAJOREROS
The inhabitants of Fuerteventura, are known with the nickname of "majoreros".
5. BEACHES
The beaches of Corralejo are among the 25 best in Europe.
6. ANTIQUITY
Fuerteventura is the oldest island in the archipelago of the Canary Islands. It was originated, like the rest of the Canary Islands, by marine volcanic processes, which began to emerge to the surface about 22 million years ago, and it is not common to find volcanic islands of more than 6 million years old, so it is all a challenge of nature.
7. THE MOST NARROW POINT AND THE HIGHEST PEAK OF FUERTEVENTURA
The narrowest point of the Island of Fuerteventura and the highest point are both in the municipality of Pajara. The narrowest is the beginning of the Jandia Peninsula. Only 5 kilometers separate Barlovento from Sotavento. The highest point of Fuerteventura is Pico de la Zarza, stands 807 meters above sea level.
8. RESERVATION
In 2009 the island as a whole was declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. The volcanic origin, the different microclimates, the geological antiquity of its soil make it a focus of protected scientific interest.
With 350,000 hectares of area declared a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO; 150 km of coastline, 150 beaches; 255 km of spectacular trails; 390 species of unique marine creatures; 22 species of dolphins or 3,000 hours of sun per year, Fuerteventura does not need many letters of presentation.
Its marine environment is undoubtedly the richest in the Canary Islands.
9. RESERVE STARLIGHT
On July 31, 2015, Fuerteventura sky finally received the certificate of quality of its skies, becoming the third Starlight Reserve
of the Canary Islands, together with Tenerife and La Palma, of the 7 that exist throughout the world: Sierra Morena and Sierra Sur de Jaen (Andalucia), Montsec (Cataluna), National Park of
Fray Jorge (Chile) and Acadian Skies and Mi'kmaq Lands (Canada).
With this certificate, Fuerteventura is committed to the protection of the quality of its night sky, also associated with cultural, scientific, astronomical,
landscaping or natural.
10. FIRST CAPITAL OF FUERTEVENTURA AND THE FIRST CITY OF THE CANARY ISLANDS
Betancuria was the first capital of the Canary Islands. The first city that got up in the Canary Islands is in Fuerteventura and is called Betancuria. It takes its name from Jean Bethencourt and was founded by the Norman conquerors in 1404. It has the first monastery, the first cathedral and episcopal seat of the archipelago and since 1979 it is a Historical Ensemble.
11. MICROCLIMES
Depending on the area of Fuerteventura in which you are, you can enjoy quite changing microclimates; it is something that must be experienced to know this peculiarity. Suppose we are in a place where it is raining, we simply have to travel about 5 kilometers and we will find ourselves under a radiant sun.
12. ADIOS STRESS
A relaxing breeze The sea breeze that cools the coast of Fuerteventura is loaded with negative ions that purify and relax. The sea is a great source of negative ionization, a part of the atoms very beneficial to our health. Negative ions allow us to relax more easily, eliminate stress and anxiety, clear the mind and improve the functioning of the digestive and respiratory system. Fuerteventura is a source of negative ionization and therefore, a relaxing, renovating and regenerating paradise. In addition, the air comes full of mineral salts and acts as a spray beneficial to the respiratory system and the skin.
13. THE ISLAND WITH MORE BEACHES
Fuerteventura has practically 80km of beach and so it is imposed as the island of the Canary archipelago with a larger coastline adapted to the bath.
14. THE LOCAL SYMBOL
The cardon of Jandia is the symbol of the island of Fuerteventura, a species of cactus with large thorns that can only be found in this territory and that was formerly used as a medicinal plant.

16. THE CHEESE
The majorero cheese was the first goat cheese from Spain to obtain the Protected Origin Denomination? The first Spanish goat cheese to obtain D.O.P. in 1996 it is the Majorero Cheese of Fuerteventura. This is what the island knows, with tender, semicured or cured cheese, naturally, with gofio or paprika. An authentic delight Maxorata.
You can taste it anywhere on the island. The gastronomy of Fuerteventura is a travel reason for true foodies. Wrinkled or boiled potatoes, tomato from Tuineje, majorera goat or the fresh fish .
If there is anything that Fuerteventura can boast, without a doubt, it is of its cheeses in its different varieties: fresh, tender, semi-cured and cured, but also
with paprika, smoked, with gofio, in oil
They are mostly goat cheeses, for being the animal that most abounds in these parts, incredible, unctuous cheeses, and with numerous national and international awards and recognitions. This is the case, for example, of the cheeses of the Grupo Ganaderos de Fuerteventura, which have accumulated numerous awards over the years, including the prestigious International Cheese Awards.
17. The WOMAD
The multicultural experience of WOMAD, a festival that brings together artists from all over the globe, offering a space of unique diffusion to voices that do not occupy a striking place in audiovisual or rotating media. The dynamics of this special event is none other than to promote the connection between the different peoples through something as universal and contagious as music is. In 2017 there is doubt that it will be celebrated again.
18. UNAMUNO IN FUERTEVENTURA
Indeed, Don Miguel de Unamuno was exiled in Fuerteventura for four months under the regime of Primo de Rivera. His arrival on the island occurred on March 10, 1924.
The great writer suffered in Fuerteventura for being far from his own, but quickly felt attracted to the place, highlighting its climate - "the eternal spring" - good food and the rich nobility of its inhabitants, the majoreros.
In his passage through the island he writes, walks, fishes ... he almost becomes a sailor and recognizes in a letter to Carlos Espla that the island is "a true sanatorium".
In the old Hotel Fuerteventura is where you stayed during your visit to the island.
Miguel de Unamuno has a House Museum in Fuerteventura. During his five months of exile on the island by the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera, Unamuno wrote some of the most beautiful poems that exist on this island territory. You can visit the house where he lived and where his objects are kept in the mornings from Monday to Friday in Puerto del Rosario.
19. MONTANA SAGRADA DE TINDAYA
Quiero finalizar mi dia de hoy con una mezcla de historia y naturaleza. Voy a contemplar y pasear por la montana de Tindaya, declarada Bien de Interes Cultural, que se levanta 400 metros sobre el paisaje arido y a la vez precioso que la rodea.
Me encuentro en un enclave magico. Magica, si, asi era considerada esta montana por los antiguos habitantes de Fuerteventura, los majos. Importantisimo enclave arqueologico e historico debido a los numerosos grabados en forma de pie (podomorfos) que se han hallado en esta montana realizados por los aborigenes.
Camino a la Montana Sagrada de Tindaya Impresiona ver la montana, imponente, y sobre todo sentir algo especial cuando la contemplas, silencio solo moldeado por el sonido el viento, grabados especiales con miles de años de antiguedad, asi es la montana de Tindaya.
20. ALOE VERA
Si te encanta cuidarte con productos naturales, tienes que venir a Fuerteventura. Ademas de contar con un destino ideal para el descanso y el relax, con una tradicion culinaria basada en los productos autoctonos y con zonas wellness y algunos de los mejores spa de las Islas Canarias, Fuerteventua cuenta con la mayor plantacion de Aloe Vera Barbadensis de Europa.
El Aloe Vera autoctono de Fuerteventuera es reconocido mundialmente por sus propiedades curativas y saludables. Las algas y las piedras volcanicas haran el resto para que vuelvas a casa como nuevo.
21. LA CAPITAL DE LA ARTESANIA MAJORERA
La localidad de Antigua, en Fuerteventura, es considerada como capital de la artesania majorera porque en ella se ubica el Centro de Artesania Molino de Antigua en el que se puede contemplar e incluso adquirir piezas artesanales realizadas por los artesanos islenos. Tambien cuenta con un molino de gofio y con unos pintorescos jardines de cactus.
22. EL ORO BLANCO DE FUERTEVENTURA
Se le llama oro blanco de Fuerteventura a la sal de espuma. En las Salinas del Carmen puedes visitar el Museo de la Sal y admirar la belleza de la espuma marina que se alma en los cocederos. El sol la convierte en oro blanco. Sin duda, una autentica experiencia que solo se puede vivir en Fuerteventura.
23. FUERTEVENTURA: NIDO DE TORTUGAS MARINAS
La costa de Fuerteventura, sobre todo la de la peninsula de Jandia, en el sur, es uno de los lugares del mundo preferidos por las tortugas marinas para anidar y reproducirse.
De las 8 especias de tortugas que hay en el mundo, 4 frecuentan las costas majoreras.
24. FAROS EN FUERTEVENTURA
La isla de Fuerteventura dispone de 4 faros: uno en el Cotillo, otro en el islote de Lobos, uno mas en la punta de Jandia y uno de especial belleza, el de la Entallada, construido sobre un acantilado.
